Your Are NOT What you Eat
The saying “you are what you eat” gets thrown around day in and day out in our health conscience world. It can have a very negative connotation. Sometimes, you want to eat ice cream with your kids or order pizza on a Friday night. Who decided this was a bad thing? I would argue that these moments are actually good for your health. You should be able to enjoy food without this idea of suffering to achieve some unattainable version of yourself.
Think about it. What did you eat today? Maybe you had every meal planned out. Maybe you ran out of time to eat the lunch you packed yourself and ended up grabbing food on the go. Or maybe you even went to happy hour with friends and enjoyed chips and salsa while venting about your stressful day at work.
The real question is not what did you eat, but how did it make you feel? When you left happy hour, how did you feel? Are you beating yourself up because you had a few too many chips and start to plan what you’ll need to do to burn it off tomorrow? Or maybe, just maybe, you had a wonderful evening with friends that helped relieve the stress of the week. Maybe you left there feeling lighter. Maybe you left feeling fuller. Full of emotions from your supportive friends that can make you laugh. The chips do not define you. The do not determine if you were “good” or “bad”. They are chips.
Here’s the thing. I identify as a “foodie”. I love eating beautiful food. For our wedding, my husband based the entire experience on enjoying an amazingly beautiful brunch (pictured above) with the people we loved. I didn’t leave there thinking about how I ruined my wedding by eating. I thought about the amazing experience of a wedding of a lifetime. So if I am what I eat, then I’m pretty damn proud of being beautifully delicious food that enhances an already amazing experience.
